Snow & Snot

Sunday, January 28th, 2007
By Beth

It’s snowing something fierce outside on this very cold Sunday afternoon.  The kids are sleeping and I can’t breathe out of my nose.  I’ve had this doggone cold for too many days now, Zicam failed me; this time around.  I’m going to take a nap and see if that helps clear my nasal passages, right now it feels like I sucked my socks up my nose.  When I check back in, perhaps I’ll share with you the "newborn nights" that we’ve I’ve been experiencing with our just turned three year old.  or maybe I’ll show you the snow boots I just bought…the first pair since grade school.  (and I live in the snow belt!)  or the details of our visit with family yesterday.  snow much to share, snow little time.

Also, if you have a favorite blog, you can nominate that blog for 10 difference catagories in the Share the Love Blog Awards, check out the details here.  I love these awards because it really showcases the blogs that tend to go "unseen."
Be back soon, my friends.

The after birthday post where I tell you that Anna got her ears pierced

Friday, January 26th, 2007
By Beth

Mistake #1:  Do not wake younger sleeping child from nap to go get his sister’s ears pierced, even though he gets to go to Build-a-Bear.
Mistake #2:  Do not wake older Birthday girl child from nap to go get her ears pierced AND to go to Build-a-Bear, because even though it’s her birthday and we are going to get her ears pierced, and go to Build-a-Bear (BAB), then, after BAB we are going to eat pizza, sing Happy Birthday to her and open more presents,  when she’s been asleep for only 30 minutes and you wake her up for Birthday shenanigans, she doesn’t give a shit about any of that.  She.Wants.To.Sleep.

BUT, she has been asking to get her ears pierced since October, people.  October.
Here she is, getting already to go, she sat down on the chair, picked out the earrings she wanted, pink flowers, which are SO cute.
Dsc04230
Here she is, getting the purple dots on her ears, I was getting so
excited.  I had been a little nervous up until this point, but once the purple markers were placed on her ears, I was feeling better.

Dsc04231
And then she started to freak out.  No earrings, friends.  Just some freakin’ purple dots on her ears.  whatever.  I would be lying if I said I wasn’t frustrated, because I was. (am)  After 35 minutes, the two Libby Lu girls, (with rather high pitched voices) and Brian and myself gave up.  We went to BAB.  Then we went home.  With a pair of $34 pink flower earrings in my pocket.  bah humbug.Dsc04251

Sidebar:  I think it’s important to tell you that the girls at Libby Lu, the ones with the high pitched voices, did a pretty good job of trying to helpAriel get settled down.  But, what did not help was them trying to hide the ear piercing guns from her by hiding their arms to the side ofAriel’s chair, whichAriel was staring directly at.  I actually pulled the girls arm up and said "please don’t do that."  The other thing that was odd, was one of them, with the REALLY high pitched voice was tellingAriel it didn’t hurt.  Since when?  Since October, we have been telling her that it does hurt, so now Miss Libby Lu is going to lie and say it doesn’t.  She’ll probably be 35 when she finally takes the plunge and gets her ears pierced.  Which is fine with me!

Happy Birthday, Babygirl

I have this four year old girl who is very sweet.  And Smart.  And Pretty.  I’m sometimes00anna_20040102_1213_all_gone_img3421
amazed by her understanding of what is going on around her.  Quite honestly, I have a difficult time believing she is this old.  It seems like only yesterday that Brian and I were in our pajamas in our livingroom, drinking coffee and staring at this beautiful bundle that we had been blessed with.  I can remember, when she was about 3 weeks old, she had been up all night long and I was tired and so frustrated (you know the feeling!), I remember thinking "I can’t wait until she is a toddler and we can hang out and talk and hold hands."  And that time is here and has been here for awhile.

One thing that everyone knows aboutAriel is that she has the most amazing memory.  It’s almost freaky.  She’ll remember details from 10 months ago that you had forgotten about.  She’s always had that ability.  My sister, Amy, has always said that she has a computer built into her brain.  If you ask her a question about someone or something that perhaps took place awhile ago, she’ll refer back to her computer and come up with the correct answer.  You can almost see it in her eyes, like she’s flipping through the files of her life.  I hope those files are happy and full of love and life.  She fills our life with sweetness with her soft voice and her made up songs she sings in the car.

Anna’s loves many things.  Like Disney Princesses, playing in any type of water, sweets, especially donuts, Dsc02336
Root Beer (she calls it Roopy Beer, and she’s only had it a handful of times), she loves broccoli and all of her veggies and enjoys apples a lot.  But she loves nothing more than watermelon and cantaloupe, she could eat it at every meal. Ariel does prefer to be called "Ariel" and she does not take the request lightly.  She actually tells people that Ariel is her name.  Like cashiers and my friends.  She actually taught her brother this fun game, so they tell anyone they come across that their names are  "Ariel and Racecar."  They loves their aliases.

Just like any other child, there are many thingsAriel does not like.  For instance, we found out this year that she is not a fan of ostriches or the smell of snakes. Ariel also has a good sense of smell.  She constantly smells things, one day we were going to a friends house and I told her we were going there and she replied with "Oh good, I can smell her house."  Luckily, it smelled just fine.  All her life she has been terrified of vacuum cleaners, TERRIFIED.  She is just now coming around and sometimes even takes part in the vacuuming.  A sure sign of my growing baby girl.

At night and before naps, she says to me "I want to hug you a little bit."  And it’s something that I treasure.  I always say yes, and while I’m hugging this child of mine, I cherish this hug, these moments that make up our happy life together.

Happy Birthday to my left handed Aquarian (just like her mother), my girl who loves to bake and watch cooking shows, who loves to pick out her outfits, the girl who cares so much for her family, Happy Birthday to my sweet littleAriel Banana.

An interview I had withAriel, just before she went to bed for the last time as a 3 year old.

Are you excited to be turning four?
Yeah.
Why?
Because.
Are you excited for you birthday?

Works for Me Wednesday

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007
By Beth

Wfmwheader_4_1 I have recently discovered how great it is to have a great nightly meal plan and I also discovered a great way to create it and shop for it!

First, I sit down at my computer and type the dates for the next 10 days in a vertical column, with approximately 4 spaces between each date.  After each date I choose a meal I’d like to serve.  I sometimes like to try new recipes and sometimes I know I’ll be out of the house, so it will be a macaroni and cheese night.  Then, underneath each meal, I type in all of the ingredients (and side dishes) I need for that meal, and that becomes my shopping list.  I have been doing this for four weeks and it has been a life changing practice…with NO fast food involved! (or last minute trips to the grocery store for ingredients) Try it–you’ll love it!  (your husband will, too!)  I also print my meal plan (before adding the incredients) and stick it to the front of my fridge.
