Works for Me Wednesday

January 24th, 2007

Wfmwheader_4_1 I have recently discovered how great it is to have a great nightly meal plan and I also discovered a great way to create it and shop for it!

First, I sit down at my computer and type the dates for the next 10 days in a vertical column, with approximately 4 spaces between each date.  After each date I choose a meal I’d like to serve.  I sometimes like to try new recipes and sometimes I know I’ll be out of the house, so it will be a macaroni and cheese night.  Then, underneath each meal, I type in all of the ingredients (and side dishes) I need for that meal, and that becomes my shopping list.  I have been doing this for four weeks and it has been a life changing practice…with NO fast food involved! (or last minute trips to the grocery store for ingredients) Try it–you’ll love it!  (your husband will, too!)  I also print my meal plan (before adding the incredients) and stick it to the front of my fridge.

I’ve fallen in love with menu planning this year. I’m amazed at how well we can eat without going out, if I just plan ahead!

    peace of Christ to you,
    Jessica

Wonderful tip. It’s so refreshing to know it’s already planned and you don’t have the dreaded question, “What do you want for dinner?” Thanks for sharing. I’m glad it’s working well for you!

That is a great idea! I’ve been planning my meals, then listing what I need for each, then making the grocery list. This will really save time. Thanks for sharing!!!

I really should do this. I kind of have a general idea for meals, and though I know it saves time and money and frustration to menu plan, for some reason it is one of the things I just hate doing. Silly, huh?

I just made my first spreadsheet! I’m very excited to try this. I’m completely addicted to Excel, so being given the chance to incorporate it into my grocery-shopping is almost euphoric! (Yeah, I’m a bit of a nerd!)

I used to plan out my meals but stopped when baby 3 was born. You’ve inspired me to try planning again!

Very organized – I am proud of you!

I love doing this too. That way the family knows and sees the weeks dinner plans in plain view on the fridge. Sometimes I will let Taylor or Jason pick which meal they want that evening from the list.

My mom always did this process, so thankfully I have not known any other way. Thanks to my mom!
