Works for Me Wednesday

February 20th, 2007

Wfmwheader_4_6Have I got a doozy of a WFMW for you!

It’s a problem we all have and hate and this solution is guaranteed to work.

When cutting strong onions, when your eyes start to burn and water…put a piece of bread in your mouth.  It takes away the stinging, burning sensation, immediately.

Immediately, I tell you!

I can’t wait to try it. I ALWAYS cry… I’ve tried putting the onions in ice water and that only partially works. Thanks for this tip!

I’ve tried other tips promising to solve the stinging-eyes-when-cutting-onions problem without success, but I’ll definitely try your idea!

My SIL does this and I wondered if it was just because she’s weird like that. Nice to have “back up” from someone other than the crazy SIL…

A whole piece? LOL All at once? I’m picturing one of those “marathon eating” contests! *wink* Or at least the scene as Da Hubby would walk in the kitchen and I have a duck bill of bread hanging out of my mouth! LOL

I had also heard chewing gum, but have had mixed results with that. I’ll have to try bread next time!

If I ever have to cut an onion (which I vow to never, ever do!) I will keep this tip in mind. For now I will continue to substitute with onion powder, which works for me!

Really? I’ll have to try this on my husband. The onions don’t bother me – my contacts block enough of the gas so my eyes don’t tear. But if he’s in the house at all while I’m chopping onions, he looks like his heart’s been broken, with the tears streaming down his face. Excellent tip!

Bread? Wow! I recently heard something about lighting a match, blowing it out, then holding that in your teeth! I like the sound of bread better!
