Growth

January 13th, 2009

In seven days, Racecar turns five.  In twelve days, Ariel turns six.

I love that they are so excited about their birthdays, I love that they discuss with each other that for a few days, they’ll be the same age.  I love January because celebrating their birthdays and creating special days for them feed me with so much love and excitement that it lasts an entire year.

I can remember having the hardest time shopping for Ariel when she was two because every toy in the store seemed to say 3 and up.  And somehow, here I am, her turning six, having the same problem, except it’s different now, everything that I want to get her still says 3 and up and everything she wants says Hannah Montana or POP STAR or BEST FRIENDS FOREVER.

With rhinestones and glitter.  And it’s usually shiny.

Our “tastes” are completely different.  Her taste being “Mom, I’m growing up.”  Mine being “please don’t grow up, baby girl.”

This year she wants two things for her birthday.  A PINK Nintendo DS and a Hannah Montana bedding.  I can handle the DS.

But the bed?  I can’t, I just can’t.   I can barely stand the thought of not pulling her first quilt up to her chin every night, we’ve been doing this for three years now.  Three short, lightning fast years that  I can’t believe are over.

She assures me that it’s okay, that she’ll give her butterfly bedding to her cousin.  So, with that assurance is proof of her maturity, her understanding and the fact that she really is growing up.  And I can’t stop her.  I can only watch and take it in and try to understand that whether her bed has butterflies on it or a giant Hannah Montana face, she’s still the same beautiful child that rocks my soul and takes my breath away every single day.

And because of that, she’ll get that Hannah Montana bed.

What a wonderful post. It truely brought tears to my eyes. I am starting to understand now what it’s like to have your little girl grow up, as I have started potty training my not yet 2 year old today, because she says she’s ready. I want to keep her in diapers and in her crib for as long as I can, because as long as I have that, she’s still my “baby”. Her second birthday is right around the corner, and even though I can’t wrap my mind around her turning two, I can’t imagine what it will be like to have her turn 3, 4, 5, and then 6! Happy Birthday to your not so little Ariel (and Racecare too). I hope you all enjoy their birthdays, and that you and your big girl have fun decorating her new room.

How wonderful that she is growing into such a mature ad well balanced young lady. How perfectly sad that your baby is growing up. My first baby will g to kindergarten in the fall and it brings tear to my eyes just thinking about it. Tears of pride and tears because my baby is growing up.

You are so nice to get the Hannah Montana bed. I think that might hurt me. Then again, my daughter is WAY too cool for that at 14. And my boys would die first :)

It hurts my heart watching them get so big. But, it is a hurt mingled with pride.

My daughter turned 14 last September and I’m still dragging my feet on her growing up. I latch on to any “little kid” things that she still enjoys, like Disney videos. Just a couple of weeks ago we updated her comforter on her bed from a quilted horse scene that she’d had for about 7 years to a more grown-up flowered quilt. Made me so sad. But at the same time, I’m loving the person she’s becoming. Sorry to tell you that it doesn’t get any easier. Enjoy every stage for what it is. :-)

Hey – we have 2 Jan bdays too! Mine are 9 & 7. Time flies!
Also, wanted to let you know the biggest hit at our house this year… Model Magic. It’s like playdoe but not as messy at all. Buy the white (it comes in dif colors but resist and only get white) and the kids can color it with washable markers (key word: washable!). They love it, they can use the markers as they manipulate the m.m. and watch it turn swirly or color it after they’ve made their model. Loads of FUN! Last night we took some to a restaurant to play with while we waited for dinner. Good stuff. Just spreading the word on a good find! Enjoy!

Hanna Montana has a bed? What in the world! Her picture standing by her bed brings me back about 28 years when my Steph was into the frills of a new bed too. She didn’t ask for a Strawberry Shortcake bed, just a waterbed, which she did get. Oh Beth, cherrish these years with your beautiful children, which I know you do. You will turn around and celebrate their 32nd birthday and wonder, where did those years go? Enjoy the party planning!

i love that they are the same age for a few days. so fun. =) and how excited she will be to have that hannah bed!!

2 of our girls have november birthdays and 2 of them are (soon to have) january birthdays. i love the creating of special days, too….this span of the holiday season & celebrating our children is so special.

the years certainly are lightening fast. something i thought i understood, but just couldn’t fathom until i think about what birthdays we’re celebrating this year. where does it go?! despite trying to be intentional each day, somehow a day has become a year already!

Why oh why do they have to grow up so darn fast? Why weren’t we warned that when becoming parents, time would excelerate at a pace that we didn’t think was possible?

I love that your children get excited in their birthdays with one another and reading about the truly special sibling bond that they have. How precious!

As for Hannah Montana, well she is a cool chick – or so I have been reassured by my 6 year old daycare girl. Back in the fall, Masyn boycotted her crib and butterfly room only to insist (as in diva tantrums if I did not do as directed) that she have a toddler bed with princess sheets. It killed me with nostalgia that my then 18 month old girl would no longer look at me through the crib rails, grinning at me as I tried to sneak up on her. Now she, at almost 2, lives and breathes princesses. Isn’t that supposed to happen closer to 6?

Have fun planning the parties! How much fun!!

Awww – What a doll!! I can see why you don’t want her to grow up. Sometimes I wish there were a pill we could give our children to keep them 1 size for awhile. Right now, it’s my 2 month old. I’d like to give her a pill as soon as she reaches the point of being able to laugh cuz her mommy’s so dang funny!!!

I wonder if you could get away with Hannah sheets and pillows. Then she could have her bedding but you wouldn’t have to give up the quilt.
