Growth

January 13th, 2009

In seven days, Racecar turns five.  In twelve days, Ariel turns six.

I love that they are so excited about their birthdays, I love that they discuss with each other that for a few days, they’ll be the same age.  I love January because celebrating their birthdays and creating special days for them feed me with so much love and excitement that it lasts an entire year.

I can remember having the hardest time shopping for Ariel when she was two because every toy in the store seemed to say 3 and up.  And somehow, here I am, her turning six, having the same problem, except it’s different now, everything that I want to get her still says 3 and up and everything she wants says Hannah Montana or POP STAR or BEST FRIENDS FOREVER.

With rhinestones and glitter.  And it’s usually shiny.

Our “tastes” are completely different.  Her taste being “Mom, I’m growing up.”  Mine being “please don’t grow up, baby girl.”

This year she wants two things for her birthday.  A PINK Nintendo DS and a Hannah Montana bedding.  I can handle the DS.

But the bed?  I can’t, I just can’t.   I can barely stand the thought of not pulling her first quilt up to her chin every night, we’ve been doing this for three years now.  Three short, lightning fast years that  I can’t believe are over.

She assures me that it’s okay, that she’ll give her butterfly bedding to her cousin.  So, with that assurance is proof of her maturity, her understanding and the fact that she really is growing up.  And I can’t stop her.  I can only watch and take it in and try to understand that whether her bed has butterflies on it or a giant Hannah Montana face, she’s still the same beautiful child that rocks my soul and takes my breath away every single day.

And because of that, she’ll get that Hannah Montana bed.

It hit me when Jacob did something as simple as taking out the mail. My bay’s not a baby anymore.

Early happy birthdays to your babies!

Oh my gosh look at that cute little sweetie by her ‘big girll’ bed – so cute. How fun that they are the same age for a few days. I didn’t realize they were that close in age.

What a sweet post! My daughter (age 7) would LOVE to have Hannah Montana bedding. I just can’t go there, but I would be willing to get her HM sheets. I just can’t stand the idea of having to change everything again when her tastes change.

Hope their parties are great fun and that you all have wonderful time!

You beautiful lady, you…that is so sweet and understanding of her needs to be her own person.

My son is just about to turn 11…GAH! and just feel lucky that you haven’t been asked for a six pack and a ride to the local strip joint.

Great post, from the heart. Seriously, how can we stop these kids from growing up?

I’m right there with you…2 January birthdays. My oldest just turned 12, yep, 12!!! I see the woman emerging in her and I really like her:). My #3 daughter will be 5 in 11 short days. She’s so excited and like you, I can see and hear her maturing. My! Oh My! Time does seem to fly, but what a wonderful treat to be able to realize early that it is all to be savored and enjoyed for exactly what it is and when it is!

Happy, happy birthday to your precious kiddos!

My daughter and I share a birthday on January 19th it’s hard to believe that she’ll be ELEVEN on Monday (even more hard to believe i’m 11 years older – ughhhh).. Funny thing is she hasn’t once said what she wanted for her birthday. I imagine she’ll hit me with that on Sunday;) Thank goodness that the Hannie Montani bedding is cute! Hope the kids have Happy Birthday’s at the folding laundry house!

Awww, I know. It is so hard to let go, isn’t it? So torturously hard to watch them grow, and wish they’d stay little forever.

How wonderful. It is so hard to watch our children as they change and mature. It is wonderful that you are taking it in stride. I have a hard time with Boo getting older. It is hard to see her go through things that I have no control over. The little girls grow into such wonderful little ladies.

Oh how precious! My 6-year old wants a pink DS too. She got a pink V-Smile. Because I got it free to review. She calls it a DS and is happy as a clam. SCORE! :-)

I would hate to turn in that adorable butterfly bedding for Hannah too. They’re growing up, aren’t they!?

I love your blog and your writing is always so beautifully done.

I have the same bedding in both of my girls room and I adore it. To change that for Hannah Montana would be quite hard and so far have been able to avoid up to this point.

    Good Luck.
