You Capture. Family.

By Beth
May 27, 2009

So, this week’s challenge, for me, I would have to put a big fat red x in the FAIL COLUMN.  My little family and I went out for a family outing on Sunday to a wonderful arboretum in the area, we wore bright colored clothing and had hot dogs before heading over.   The main flaw was that I chose to wear my bangs off of my forehead which equals GIGANTIC FOREHEAD.  Which equals OHMYGODDONTDOTHATEVERAGAIN.

The second flaw was that it was terribly, terribly sunny outside which is not ideal for taking photos.

The third flaw was that after placing the camera on the tripod, I never checked back to see how the layout was.  It wasn’t until we got home that I saw that I was chopping Brian’s head off.  Poor guy.

The final flaw happened after I had found the perfect spot for my little family to take the most perfect family photo.  It was stunning.  Green grass, shade, big rocks providing texture and color, birds chirping.   As we were about to set up, Brian realized he left his sunglasses somewhere on the trail, so he set off to get his sunglasses.  In the meantime, I let the kids run around inside the pavilion because when the kids run around, Mom gets a full night’s sleep.

I did warn them to “be careful” because I’m motherly like that.  All of a sudden I saw Racecar fall backwards onto the concrete floor, I started to dart towards him when Ariel ran towards me holding her nose.  Her very bloody nose.  AT which point, Brian arrived.  I cupped my hands underneath her nose and blood poured into my hands.  I had nothing except the clothes on my back, no purse, no tissues.

We made our way to the bathrooms, at which point,  both of my aching, crying children declared that they just wanted to leave.

And so with that,  I turned towards my beautifully shaded area and waved a somber farewell.

And so I am left with this.  Head cut off, squinty eyes, horrid posture, but man, do I love this little family of mine.

Well, you’ll definitely always have the story to go along with this one! And it’s still good. Love all the color!

    Kellyn says:

Somedays it just doesn’t work in our favor at all. Even with the head chopping it is a great shot of all of you.

Hope you did get some sleep that night…running kids do equal a good night sleep.

  3. 3

I still don’t have a totally awesome shot of my entire family. I long for that.

    Nell

    Christy M. says:

    Poor Racecar and Ariel :(

The best part of that picture is you both look so good! I feel like I haven’t seen Brian in ages and he looks GREAT. You’re a lucky girl!

Even with your bad posture and huge forehead, you look amazing, too, sugarlips. So beautiful.

  5. 5
    Melissa says:

I have that shirt, in white and green-blue. ;o)

    kris says:

Sounds like a typical family photoshoot! You all look beautiful!

    April says:

    Poor kiddos!

Some of my favorite pictures of my family are the ones my parents hate the most. I don’t know if that helps!

And I feel the exact.same.way. when I wear my bangs off my forehead. :o )

  8. 8

It never dawned on me to put myself in the pictures, too, LOL!

And OHMYGOD, Racecar is your twin.

  9. 9
    Bacardi Mama says:

Poor babies! True to form though, you still got a great capture. How do you do it??????

  10. 10

These are great, Beth!! I don’t have any this week. But I do love your hair like that. : )

    Abby says:

I think it turned out really cute even with the head chopping! I just found you and I am playing along, but since I just discovered this tonight I did cheat a bit. Sorry! I promise I will follow the rules next week!

  12. 12

You have a beautiful family, head chopping and all. I didn’t manage to get one with ME in it. Oh well. That seems to be the case these days!

  13. 13
    Kirsten says:

Sorry the perfectly planned out day turned out with blood and injuries for both kids. But, your pictures are never bad. Even with an almost headless husband, too bright sun, and no bangs, you still all look great!

  14. 14

oh, what a day for you!

But great shots of your little family

  15. 15

Don’t shoot me in the face for sayin’ so, but I kinda like your hair like that *runs for cover*

Poor poor Ariel and Racecar. They’re alright now, right?

And head cut off or no, it’s still a beautiful family picture. I need a tripod to be able to do this, too. And one of those clicky thing-a-ma-bobs, too, to control when the camera takes the shot, I suppose??? (Sorry for the non-technical jargon, I’m still wayyyy new to this)

  16. 16
    debi says:

Beth you are so wrong. I think you look very pretty with your hair off your face. All of you look great. Hope the kiddos are alright now.

  17. 17
    Erin says:

I think you are crazy because I love your hair pulled back like that!
As always, your family is beautiful!

  18. 18
    Nique says:

Aww… poor little things! Hope everyone has recovered. But the photo turned out great – cropped hed and all! :D

  19. 19
    Saj says:

It’s easy to critique that picture as a professional-but figure that one day, not too long ago, you would have looked at those pictures and thought, “Damn, I’m a pretty good photographer!” I think they’re great! You look like a happy, loving family, and that’s what matters!

  20. 20
    Lolli says:

You crack me up! I have plenty of not-so-great photos in less-than-ideal settings, but they are still great for the memories that they hold.

  21. 21
    sunnymama says:

You have a beautiful family! Not a fail at all :)

    Mum-me says:

Sounds like you had a rough afternoon. At least you got some photos! I like the vibrant colours.

  24. 24

Oh Beth. I love how even your “fail” photos still look great. Hope the kids are doing better…Sounds like Sunday just wasn’t your day.

So…I just wanted to let you know, btw, that I gave you an award on my blog today. I’m sure you’ve gotten it before, probably more than once, but I just wanted to let you know what an inspiration you are to me. :-) *hugs*

  25. 25
    Kathleen says:

Fail?! NO WAY!! You did great! And what a day for you with all the owies! Hope everyone’s better.

  26. 26

It is still a really great picture!

  27. 27
    Mominin says:

Oh…I think it is still very good! And you look great!

  28. 28
    Jessi says:

I love your shots this week. Your family is beautiful and I like to have a few “real life” shots mixed in so that I remember that we were not always perfectly posed and centered.

  29. 29
    Erin says:

I hit submit too soon, and I wanted to say that I love how you and Brian are holding hands in the first shot because it’s really subtle and sweet and totally made me smile.

  30. 30
    Carol Olsen says:

Despite what you might think – the photos are great! I like your hair like that!

I am certain that some mommy kisses made the kids both feel better quickly!

  31. 31
    Sarah says:

What an adorable family! And I love your hair like that! You’re crazy!

  32. 32

I like your bangs pulled back…for real.

Too bad the pictures didn’t turn out quite as well as you wanted… :( Family pictures are always hard when YOU are the photographer.

My pictures this week are of my EXTENDED family!

  33. 33

I’m late this week. Is it Thursday already?

Ah, some photos just don’t make it do they, but hey…at least you tried. So sorry about the bloody nose and everything else. It is amazing how fast things can go downhill!

I’ll be back later to post my link.

(Hope you are hanging in there this week in other ways too)

  34. 34
    Yelena says:

Ahh, family pictures, how I love them. No really, I do, just when I’m not in them! But the older I get the more I appreciate family pictures.

  35. 35

Love the story behind the picture and that’s reality! We don’t always have perfection. I do adore your hair pulled back though! You have a great forehead!

  36. 36

I love how the second picture shows that your kids have the *exact* same smile as you! Very cool…

  37. 37
    Catie says:

Aw, your poor little children…what you subject them too;) Seriously, I hope everyone has recovered. Isn’t that the way it always goes? I think the pictures turned out great despite the drama!

  38. 38

You have a sweet family…and it sounds just the way family photos are supposed to happen :)

  39. 39
    IE Mommy says:

Sorry to hear about the mishap(s). Nothing becomes more stressful than a fun outing gone wild.

  43. 43

Oh man Beth, I hated a few of the photos I used in the first weeks of You Capture. Hated. Like, I was embarrassed to submit them. Yours are so not in even close to being in that category. Also, your bangs are cute!

  44. 44

Okay, girl you are CRAZY. Your hair looks great and that little family of yours is STINKIN CUTE! Sounds like a murphy’s law kind of day…I have those often. Sometimes you have to just laugh…which is totally what I did when I read this. Out loud. Please don’t ever stop writing this blog!
    :)

  46. 46

You are so funny! Your family is adorable.

  47. 47
    Kim says:

This is how most family portraits turn out in my family. Didn’t even want to attempt one this time. But you know what? These are great pictures.

    I’m finally up.

    Keli says:

I think the pics are pretty great!! I’m sorry to hear about your day, though — wow!
