You Capture. Emotion.

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
By Beth

Oh, this week’s was so much fun, wasn’t it?

Wait.  I say that every week, don’t I?  At least I can admit it, right?

I’m on vacation right now and had to stop kicking everyone’s butts in Mario Kart just so I could come here and post, so I’m going to get to it so I can get back beating everyone royally.

I just love this.  She always wants her Daddy to throw her up in the air, no matter how tall she gets, he always says okay.

Probably because he gets to see this:

I’m really hoping to be able stop by your sites this week, if I can pull myself away from the sprinklers and the s’mores, I’ll do my best to come visit you!

It’s your turn to share!

Handmade Inspired – a guest

I am most excited about today’s post.  If you aren’t reading Erin, you need to head over to her site and add her to your Google reader like NOW.  Trust me.  Her only flaw is that her skin may be too perfect and that she doesn’t post nearly enough.  I could read her all day, everyday.

She also has amazing taste, so who better to ask to write a Handmade Inspired post for me? I’m so lucky that she graciously agreed.

See for yourself how delightful she is.
* * *

Hi lovely people. Erin from It’s Your Movie here. When Beth very sweetly asked me to write a guest Handmade Inspired post for her my first reaction (apart from feeling very lovely inside and gracious) was pure excitement.  And a little panic.  But mostly excitement.  This is a subject I am both familiar with and love to talk about.  (Okay there are a lot of subjects I love to talk about.  I love to talk!)

I have been very into making and decorating things my entire life and very clearly remember the day I discovered etsy. We had just moved into a shabby little house that had nothing handmade OR inspired decorating its walls. I was feeling kind of gloomy and was googling something or other (this part is not important, just stick with me here) and then lo and behold! Fanfare played in the outskirts of my imagination as etsy.com loaded onto my computer screen for the very first time.  Art! Jewelry! Letterpress! Clothing! Toys!  I was in disbelief and felt pretty small when I started scrolling through and realized the sheer volume of brilliant people out there making art.

I have had many items saved in my favorites folder over the years and it is difficult to cull them down into just a few items, but if I could purchase things at will at this very moment, here are the things I would buy.

Fondue and Fondue Jr sell light switch plates, tissue boxes, and other small items that have been covered in super fun vintage wallpaper. I adore vintage wallpaper and often fantasize about doing a bathroom or closet in it.  Realistically I think it is so kitschy that it should be digested in small doses. These little accessories are just right.  I would definitely do the switches in my kitchen and in my daughter’s room if I had some spare cash.

Tollipop oh Tollipop! These watercolors are so youthful and sweet and they make me feel both spunky and a little wistful, like a child. I specifically love the Bundle Of Joy print. Looking at it conjures up that glowy feeling you get when your baby rests her head on your shoulder.

Speaking of wistfully beautiful illustrations, I am IN LOVE with Jen Corace’s illustrations (please click over and check out her gallery– “swoon” doesn’t even cover it) and this handmade planner from If’n Books features a Corace illustration on the outside and blank pages full of promise on the inside. Sometimes it’s nice to use our hands to write things down rather than just type type typing all the time right?

Gypsystudio and Gemma Factrix are just two of many lovely jewelry shops (are you listening husband?) that I peruse. They both incorporate feminine details and vintage beads mixed with hammered metal.  This combination of materials is as contradictory as any random day in my busy-mom life. I also love the feminine whimsical details at shops like Sea Unicorn.  Okay fine, I just love the bow.  I just. love. bows.

And then there is the whole letterpress thing. I have a soft spot for letterpress and I’m not even entirely sure why. Things just look so much more official when pressed with a letterpress. I love the way pressed paper feels and looks and probably even smells.  (I haven’t checked to be sure, but in my imagination it smells wonderful.)
I wish I had my own letterpress in my garage right this second.  Letterpress and printing are happening in such a fun way right now.

So pretty. (Left to right, Sweetbeets, Kseniya, CindyTomczykArt)

And the messages!   I want to buy them all and tuck them into my bag or pocket and then whisk them out for friends whenever the occasion is appropriate.

So fun.  (Left to right, linocutboy, richiedesign, laladexpress)

Thank you Beth for asking me to come ramble on your blog. I hope I have left ya’ll feeling happy and inspired.

And in case you didn’t know…  (this is the part where I whisk the card out of my bag and surprise you with it) you are AMAZING!

Summer lovin’

By Beth

It wasn’t my intention to run away from my blog like that.  Nope, never thought I would have gone so long without posting in a million years, but I did because we’ve been so busy.  I would sit at my computer and open up my blog dashboard and be like “oooh, how about I don’t blog right now and instead I go to twitter?“  or “look, there’s something shiny!“  or “Maybe after one more ice cream cone I’ll write a post.”

And then I didn’t.

We had the garage sale and the weather was great on Friday, on Saturday it was foggy, rainy and then all of a sudden it was freezing outside.  Then I took a nap and ate Papa John’s.

It was delicious.  (goes without saying, right?)

But then I ate too much and wanted to throw up.  Overall the sale was a huge success.

Then on Sunday we woke up to the most amazing weather day ever.  We worked outside, I cleaned (booo!) and did laundry (double boo!) and then I went grocery shopping.  Later in the day I thought “I know, let’s have a WAY LAST MINUTE COOKOUT!“  So, we did!  Sarah and Stephanie came over with their families.  It was so fun.  I decided to make steak kabobs which is funny because I had never made kabobs before and I also don’t make steak because I suck at it.

I decided to try again, this time for a whole group of people.  Some people call me stupid…I call me, um…stupid.  Because although the flavoring was quite delish, instead of plain ol’ steak, I made steak bubble gum.  Which is not technically what people are looking for when they go to a cookout, so, let’s put a big red X in the STEAK COLUMN because FAIL.  Steak should not take 29 minutes to chew.  One piece.

But, Sarah Viola saved the day with s’mores and not just any s’mores but s’mores with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Stephanie’s son got the first one because he so DANG cute.  He thought it was good but then I saw Stephanie eating it so he either changed his mind or Stephanie kicked him in the shins and stole it from him.

(I’m pretty sure she stole it.)

Sarah also brought strawberry marshallows to have with the regular Hershey bar s’mores.  Ariel thought it was the greatest thing ever and came back about 50 times to the s’mores line.

It was an amazing night, the kind that was just too perfect and could never be replicated, but that’s okay, because OH MY GOD I’ll never forget it.  The husbands may forget about it but that’s because they drank (A LOT) beer.

Then today Brian was home because he’s actually on vacation for the first time in years.  (like a real vacation without working from home.)    We went for a picnic and then to a park.  It was fun.  Really fun.  (are you noticing that FUN is our theme this week?  It’s true.  It is.)

We took our shoes off and played in the grass.

I did a cartwheel.  I’m sore.

Then we went for ice cream and shopped at Target.

Tonight, we grilled chicken and ate outside, the slight warm breeze and the birds and the sun starting to set and the beauty of my family sitting around our table was so perfect to me.  (also?  The chicken was grilled to perfection.  Note to self: stick to chicken.)   This day, I want to wrap it up and put it under my bed and take it out when I’m feeling down.  It was perfect.

And now tomorrow are going on vacation…

A few months ago, Ford asked me to test drive one of their Hybrid vehicles and then we were planning on going on a road trip this summer so we put the two together and we leave tomorrow.  We are staying at my sister’s in Louisville until Sunday, then we are driving to Michigan on Saturday and staying with my other sister.  (where we will fish and go on a boat which is crazy because I DON’T DO WATER…but I’m going to, for the kids.)  (I think.)

(probably not) (OKAY, I WILL, LEAVE ME ALONE.)

We have many fun (and inexpensive) things planned for this week and I can’t wait.  FUN.  That’s what this summer is going to about and it’s already blowing my mind.

I will be around a little bit this week, but I do have some guest writers coming this way, too.  It’s going to be a great week.

Go read this post, it’s about pregnancy and it’s so incredibly honest and beautiful and OHMYGOD so wonderfully written that I had to stop what I was doing (eating) to tell you all to go and visit Stacey and read this amazing and relevant post.

The end.  I can now breathe and finish eating.

Thank you, Stacey.

Rummaging

By Beth

Friends, I somehow got it done.  My house is clean(ish), 30% of my basement has been searched through and everything is priced and ready to go.  Clothing is hung, singles are on hand and we have done our best to hide the toys that we are selling from the kids.

I know, we’re jerks.

So, I won’t be around much.  I need to go to bed, like, an hour ago, whoever planned this neighborhood sale, planned it to start at SEVEN IN THE MORNING which for me is like two in the morning.  Same difference.

I read a great post by my best friend, The Nester.  (okay, she doesn’t know she’s my best friend, DON’T TELL HER I SAID THAT, I  WOULD TOTALLY DIE IF SHE KNEW I SAID THAT, but she IS my best friend.)  Anyway, she wrote this great post about garage sales, tips on buying and selling, you should read it.  Damn her and her inspiring me all of the time.

And what do you call it in your neck of the woods?  Garage sale?  Yard sale?  Rummage sale?  Tag sale?  I’m curious.

Also?  Seriously?  Have you voted for me today?  I know I’m asking a lot from you, but I know how many of you visit my blog each day and if all of you would just vote for me on Friday alone, well, let’s just say I WOULD BE WINNING (by a lot).  So, let’s just make a little goal, k?

How about by the end of day on Friday, I Should Be Folding Laundry has 450 votes under Best Eye Candy.  It’s totally achievable and if you help me reach this goal, YES, YOU, then I’ll shave my head.

Okay.  I won’t.

But I’ll pretend like I will.  Same thing, right?

Thanks.  I love you.  You’re pretty and you smell nice.  Seriously, you do.

Oh and you can vote daily.  Just sayin’, yo.
