I’m not trying to make you hungry

August 17th, 2009

I’m also not trying to make you want fair food, but I must talk about what I ordered, I mean, you know Anna and Noah ate corn dogs and I was like “um…gross.“  But all of you disagreed.

Apparently, there is something wrong with me, not them.

Anyway, I ordered nachos, like supreme nachos without onions.

fair food

While I was taking this photo, Noah asked me why I was taking pictures of my food.  While I was about to reply with “it’s art,” Brian said “your Mom is a freak.”

(he just doesn’t understand.)

Now, what you can see a little bit, all nicely bokeh’d in the background, is the Deep Fried Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese bites.  Wisconsin sure does know how to deep fry their cheese.

They served their deep fried cheese with ranch dressing.  I dipped the first one in ranch and took a bite and it was a cross between heaven and paradise sprinkled with Brad Pitt.  I quickly ate the rest of it.  The kids were eyeballing me.  I asked them if they wanted to take a bite and they said “No.”

“Are you kidding me?!  You’ll eat CORN DOGS, but not this?! Have you lost your mind?  Haven’t I taught you that anything deep fried equals good?”

I was frustrated.  I mean, I have spent HOURS upon HOURS teaching my kids good values.

Not wanting to upset their Mom and also curious about the moans that were coming out of their parents with each bite, they each took a bite and proceeded to helps us (maybe a little too much) with our tray of cheese.

Anna at the fair

Noah at the fair

Don’t they look so intense?

I find it necessary to tell you that at this point, Brian and Anna got up to get Brian some corn on the cob.  The family sitting next to us found a deep fried fly in their food.  It was really gross.

I was listening to them talk about the deep fried fly and looking at my deep fried cheese and I realized…I just don’t care.  I continued to eat.

And so did the rest of us.

after dinner at the fair

I’m pretty sure this is my last post about fair food, unless of course Brian and I go back the minute we drop the kids off at school on their first day.

Not that I’m making big plans or anything. *cough.*

I would have totally told them that they wouldn’t like the cheese bites. But that’s just me… ; )

Elaine, I very seriously considered that option, but there were so many bites that I feared death if I ate all of them.

yumm.. our fair doesnt start until September… but I’m totally making my list of things to eat now!! (Just so I dont accidentally leave something out)
The best part is that I get to go back many many times for free since I participate in the cookoffs.. I get lots of free tickets..
hmmm.. fair food is totally calling my name!!
Do you guys have those elephant ears that are covered in chili and have lettuce and tomatoes and chesse on them? We call them Navajo Tacos (but im not sure if that is just a utah thing..We also call Elephant Ears scones. and the general population has NO IDEA that a scone is actually like a biscuit with fruit in it!) That should be your next stop!!

p.s. I love that you use their names now.. something about it just makes it so much more personal. I find myself kind of saying awww.. in my head everytime i see thier names! I LOVE IT!

I’m so sad I didn’t make it to the fair this year. :(

I can not resist roasted corn at fairs, carnivals, flea markets–pretty much any where. Deep fried foods, and if they are on a stick it’s even better, are to be savored. Hooray for your kids giving cheese a chance.

God, I love deep fried cheese in an almost lustful way. I’m so sad that when I did make it to the fair, I was too exhausted and hot to really enjoy the fried food like I’d wanted, because right now, I could put the hurt on some fair food.

I completely agree with your disdain of corndogs…much to the chagrin of my husband and son. But man-oh-man, I could so eat that fried cheese! Is that actually the squeeky cheese curd they fry or just bites of cheese?

Are these pictures from the Indiana State Fair? We live in Indiana just south of Indianapolis and are planning to go this weekend. We’ve been so busy we haven’t had the chance to go yet. Anyway I’m hitting the ATM and piggin’ out on some fair food this weekend!

Oh deep fried cheese…… mmmmmmm…. I’ve never tried cheddar though. When Hubs and I were on our honeymoon in the Dominican Republic 6 years ago, the resort offered deep-fried mozzarella (I think) with every meal. I absolutely swooned with every bite and Hubs thought it was so disgusting.
I think about that cheese on a very regular basis…

OMG. Can you please FedEx an order of those nachos to me? I’ll also take a corny dog and some of those cheese bites. Hell, just go ahead and send a corn on the cob and funnel cake while you’re at it. I’ll pay you back for the shipping.

    Smooches.

I do feel some Wisconsin pride when out-of-towners discover the joy of Wisconsin cheese. And deep fried cheese curds are the best! Of course, we also have squeeky cheese curds which aren’t deep fried, but quite tasty.

Ranch dressing is a great dip choice, but also consider marinara or Thousand Island dressing.

    Other great Wisconsin treats:
    Frozen custard
    Beer
(We don’t do well with low-fat stuff around here!)

I’m still sticking with my doughboy. With tons of powdered sugar. And I can eat one of these huge, golden fried, puffy darlings all by myself, thank you. (In other words, don’t anyone ask me for even a tiny bite of mine ‘cuz you don’t want a “whole one” for yourself. Not buying that excuse. And not sharing…)
