Today, he turns six. Six years ago he was born, weighing ten pounds.
I’m pretty sure for the first year all he did was cry and scream with an occasional chubby cheek smile here and there. He was a handful but ever since then (and well, even during those crying and screaming times) he has always been our baby boy. (we can still call him that at six! I asked him!)
I can say with all honesty that Noah is joy, that he IS love that he understands life and fragility and gratitude. He knows to be grateful. Last night we were discussing the earthquake in Haiti, I talked how lucky we are to just have the water we drink and he continued on, very emphatically listing all of life’s little luxuries and how “everybody in this world should be thankful.” He even used hand motions.
He gets it and that makes me proud.
Noah constantly makes us laugh with the way he thinks and the way he talks. The other night, he was awake coughing quite a bit, I asked him if he wanted to sit with me in my room for a little bit, thinking that maybe his coughing fit would end.
He very politely said “No, thank you, I’m tired as a rooster.”
I’m not sure what that meant but I think it meant he was pretty tired. (and pretty cute, too.)
Sometimes I fail at finding just the right words to describe him and I become frustrated and then realize what a wonderful person you must be to be “indescribable.” That truly is what he is. You have to meet him and look into his big brown eyes to understand his beautiful nature, how kind he truly is and how much he loves to love. I love how he loves.
For the past four birthdays, I’ve interviewed the kids the night before their birthdays. They now look forward to this tradition (as do I!) Here was my interview with Noah last night.

I’ve seen A LOT of babies (I am a midwife)…but mamma that last picture…it has to be the cutest ever.
I’ve been waiting for this all year. I loved it. I love my Noah, even though he is some other teachers Noah now. He is truly one of the sweetest, thoughtful little guys I have ever known. Give him a big hug and kiss for me and tell him it’s from me. I sure hope he remembers me. Now, just five more days till Anna’s interview.
Happy Birthday!

Tales Of A Fourth Grade Nothing
What a sweet, sweet boy!
I love that you interview your kids the night before their birthdays. I think I’d like to start that tradition too. Thank you for the inspiration.
I think it’s funny that he “absolutely will never, ever eat cinnamon rolls.” And what’s the story behind the spanking question…?
I miss Noah. And you’re right, he is indescribable. And he is love.
