You Capture – Depth of Field

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010
By Beth

Hi friends!

How did you do with Depth of Field? I had fun, wish I were able to capture more but that’s okay.

Tonight, I was changing Elijah’s diaper and he was so very angry with me. He was angry (he hadn’t eaten in TWO WHOLE HOURS!) and his diaper was very full and so it took awhile to get him all cleaned up. I was about to nurse him when I decided to give him his medicine which typically calms him down because he enjoys the taste so much.

I gave it to him and he calmed right down. Even found himself a foot rest.

I bought this flower the day before Mother’s Day. It’s so strange and well, it won’t die, apparently. I love the subtleness of the chair in the background. The flower looks like a firework or ramen noodles, don’t you think?

And now we are back to Eli’s feet. Just look at those cute little piggies.

Those are my depth of field shots, I can’t wait to see yours!

Time is so short

I know you won’t believe this, but Brian is home from his business trip.

Already.

Yes, I said already.  The weekend flew by, it even freaks me out a little bit at how the entire five days are a total blur.  Well, maybe not all of them but 90% of it.

We did so much and that makes me pretty proud of myself.  Friday night we went to a Matilda Jane Trunk Show where I splurged on a dress for Anna, then my best friends came over and they held Eli while I drank a beer and finally relaxed.  But I went to bed at 1:30 and Eli woke up at three something, the night was short but totally worth it.

On Saturday, the kids and I went to a European Market, it was so much fun.  That’s where I bought the flowers you see at the top of this post.  We went to a park later in the day and then ordered pizza.   On Sunday, I was officially worn out, I could not keep my eyes open, it was definitely the most difficult day of them all.  LUCKILY, my parents came over and held Eli while I took a nap and then they made dinner.  It was fantastic.

After weeks and weeks of trying to pinpoint Elijah’s fussy problem, I decided to call his pediatrician yesterday morning.  When we arrived I was so happy to see that he had gained 2 pounds from his birth weight, he’s getting so big.  The doctor diagnosed him with reflux and medication has begun.

I am so hopeful.

My Mom came over and watched Anna and Noah while Eli and I headed to his appointment, when we came home I found that she had folded two loads of laundry and she didn’t just fold two loads of laundry but she folded them perfectly.  She made me realize that maybe I just don’t know how to fold laundry and maybe she should always fold my laundry or train me?  I’m sure she taught me when I was a teenager but I was probably too busy thinking about more important things like what time my boyfriend was going to pick me up in his Pinto.

Anyway, I have obsessed over her laundry folding since she left yesterday and I’m wondering if your Mom is a better folder than you?  I’m thinking I really suck at it but not as bad as Brian but not nearly as good as my Mom.  (I should take a picture but I am so lazy.)

So, I’m feeling inspired again.  Inspired to make my house pretty, inspired to declutter and reorganize and inspired to also become a better folder.  (I promise, I am not talking about folding laundry because of the name of my blog.)

In general, I’m just excited that Brian is home, safe.  I’m excited to have some time to myself.

And tomorrow, I’m joining Weight Watchers, I guess I’m excited about that, too.

What are you excited about?

Friday Morning Coffee

Friday, May 14th, 2010
By Beth

Good morning, friends.

This moment right now, where I am sitting on the couch with my laptop on my lap and my red coffee mug not too far away?  This moment for me, IT IS PEACE.

Yesterday, Brian left for a five day business trip to LA, leaving me home with Anna, Noah and Elijah.  Alone.  For five days.  You remember, Elijah, right?  The newborn? Yes, him.

He’s a handful, friends.  I’m not going to come here and complain about how difficult yesterday was because BOOOWHOWANTSTOHEARIT?  Instead, I’m going to tell you how much I love this moment right now.  The sun is shining, I showered!  Yesterday I vacuumed!  (and woke the baby because of it, but still!)  And my two older children?  They are the best.

I still wonder why my husband goes on business trips and his company is like “here, take our card, order food, drink wine, have room service, make sure housekeeping comes in and cleans up after you and make sure you sleep well on that big, warm, over-priced, comfortable bed.”

While I’m at home flying solo with three kids, not sleeping, eating cold macaroni and cheese while trying to find the time to clean the toilets.  How about he gets the macaroni and cheese and his company sends me a babysitter, a chef and a housekeeper to help me out while he’s away.  It’s all so backwards, don’t you think?

(I promise you, I’m not bitter at Brian, I’M JUST SAYIN’, OKAY?!)  (and I’ve said this to him and he laughs!  and he better agree….)

Obviously, I only have a few moments to spend here, which are now almost over.  My neighborhood is having it’s annual garage sale this weekend, so Eli and I are going to peruse the goods and get some fresh air.  Because it’s sunny outside.  Not raining.  And not forty degrees.

It’s good stuff.

And even though these next 4,231 hours (okay, maybe a little bit less than that) are sure to be a million times more chaotic than this moment is right now, I’ll remember this moment and be grateful for it.

I’ll be grateful for a lot, actually.

You Capture – Yellow

Thursday, May 13th, 2010
By Beth

Why, hello!

I have to tell you, when I pick a challenge each week, I have no idea what I’ll find to photograph, just like you.  Which causes a problem when I put off taking pictures each week and leaves me with what’s left in my house.

See?

fruit

hello yellow

There’s my yellow.  Pretty mellow, I admit.

Now it’s your turn to share but first … read the guidelines.  PLEASE?  With sugar on top?  Thanks, you’re the best.

Let’s get technical, shall we?  Next week’s challenge will be DEPTH OF FIELD (DOF).  Here’s an example of depth of field:

or

flower with cityscape DSC_9722

See that?  Focus subject, blurry background.  It can also be vise versa, focused background, blurry foreground.  Fun, right?

For those of you working in your manual settings, remember that the lower your aperture setting, the more depth of field you’ll have in your photo.  A great explanation of DOF can  be found here.

Happy Capturing, friends!
