Three Months

June 29th, 2010

I’m not sure how it happened but Eli turned three months old today.  Right now, as I type this, he’s doing his usual thing of waking up from a short nap.

He’s not a fan of naps.  I wonder if you really  believe it when I say he really doesn’t nap much.  Just to give you an idea, my sister, who we just spent the weekend with, said “I think it’s funny that you said he sleeps during the day. At all. He naps less than an 18 month old.”

It’s true.

But at night, he sleeps quite well.  He wakes up right at four in the morning usually and I nurse him.  Last night I was up with him for 38 minutes and we fell back asleep.  I don’t mind that at all.

This photo was taken when he was just a few weeks old.  He and I were in the midst of a three hour nap.  I’m pretty sure it was the last time he slept during the day.

oh elijah

I need to focus on his naps, I think, I’d love for him to get good rest during the day and I’d love to be able to get something done in a timely manner.  I do sort of like not focusing too much on naps, however.  Like tomorrow, we are going to the zoo, I know he’ll sleep when he sleeps and his schedule is up to him tomorrow.  I kind of like it that way simply because we have older kids who are busy and LOUD and keeping a schedule is just not easy.

Anyway, enough about the naps that don’t exist.

We simply love him.

Last week, I gave him a bath in his bath seat (lounger?) in the big tub for the first time.  It was just me, in the house the kids and Brian were outside.  Before I knew it, we were all in the bathroom, watching Eli as he stared at us like we were a group of crazies.  I love the way Anna and Noah love him.  I love the way their love grows every single day for him.  I love that I get to witness it.

first bath in the tub

(kudos to Brian for this shot.)

Everyday feels like a new adjustment but the overall stress of having a newborn seems to be getting better ever day.  We can usually eat dinner together, ride in the car together and even almost get through Costco without too many tears.  (Eli’s tears.  Not Brian’s.  Those will always be there.)

Eli WM 2742

I think tonight we are going to put Eli in his crib for the first time.  I’ll honestly miss him while he sleeps but I wonder if he would get a better night’s rest if he were alone.

How has three months gone by so quickly?

Eli WM 2714

Is time flying for you, too?

Maybe I’ll keep him in my room tonight.  Just one more time.

I don’t know if what Eli had/has is considered colic but Theo was super colicky and didn’t nap longer than 30 minutes at a time. I read that colicky babies take longer to develop a nap schedule and it was totally true (such a big help while dealing with a squawking infant, no?). Theo got into a consistant 9-11 and 1-3 nap schedule between 4-5 months and stayed that way until he dropped his morning nap after he turned a year old.

Maybe Eli will be the same way? No matter what at least he’s sleeping at night! WOOO!

And man is he ever perfect. Can’t wait to meet him!

Yes time is flying by for me. I just posted about it. http://www.lovingmylifeblog.com/2010/06/7-weeks.html

We moved my Dustyn to his crib at 8 weeks and he slept better. I am contemplating moving Carsyn soon.

He is so adorable! Love the new pictures. I am glad things are getting better for you.

My 4 1/2 month old slept MUCH better once I moved her to her crib at 6 weeks.. I was going back to work at 8 weeks and I needed her to start sleeping through the night.. By about the 3rd night she stopped waking up at all in the middle of the night. I think the dog and daddy’s snoring was waking her up when she was next to me :D

    He is such a cutie!!

My 3 year old hardly ever napped as a newborn. It stressed me out at first…I’m a big time scheduler…but I learned to just go with it and not worry so much. Eventually he did work his way into a daytime napping pattern.

Now my 4 week newborn is napping away in the pack and play and I’m trying to cherish every moment with her while waiting for that 3 month mark when things seem to get so much easier.

Time DOES fly!! Yes. And I’m sitting here staring at this gift I made him that I’ve been too lazy / brain mushed / stupid to remember to carry out to my car and take into the post office. I blame it on the pregnancy. This baby is going to be SMART b/c she is sucking every last bit of my brain power out of me.

The gift *might* help, though … so I need to do that this week. Tomorrow. It’s on “the list.”

    Love you!! xo

    I especially like Brian’s pic.

I have a confession: I am addicted to co-sleeping. :-( I make excuses to bring E (our TWO year old) back to our room. On weekends I often encourage the kids to watch a late night movie in our bed so we can fall asleep together. (Both E and C, C is FOUR). …. excuse me while I run and duck in shame.

I miss them when they sleep…….

Eli is such an old soul, he’s all, “Naps are for babies and I can simply not be bothered”.

He will get there, Troy had a hard times with naps and I think it was tummy related. Once he started solids, he was down with nappie naps.

    Happy 3 month birthday, Elijah.

P.S. Send him to Colorado, kthx.

How does the time go by so fast?! We’re only at three and a half weeks here and I already can’t believe how much of it we’re not going to get back.

My boy didn’t get into a good nap routine until he was about six months old. I truly thought I was going to have a child who didn’t nap, and then all of a sudden, he did.

Schedule Shmedule. You are right with older kids it’s really hard. I stuck to the Baby Whisperers idea of EASY. Eat Activity Sleep You (yes, YOU get time!). The time frame in which it happens doesn’t matter, just that it happens in that order. It saved my life! OK, baby advice that you don’t need to hear all done.
    He’s a cutiepatootie.

That is a BEAUTIFUL baby you’ve got there! He’s at one of my all-time favorite baby ages. All baby boys look sort of like cute little old men at this age.

Time is flying for me, too. My little guy just hit 2 1/2, but it seems like last week he was Eli’s size.

Congratulations on making it to three months and sharing your joy with all of us.

I remember each and every night everyone of my five babies moved out of my bed to their cribs, I sobbed and sobbed. But seeing the last 3 could walk when they moved, it was time (18 mos). Oh how I wish I could turn back time to those baby days. I miss them terribly. My heart’s desire is to another, but my health and age (36)…But God can do amazing things!

Eli is just precious, there’s something with his eyes, so mesmerizing. As if he so much to share with this world, so muuch knowledge. Love on him for me tonight.

Our first, Jackson, was just like Eli. He would NEVER sleep during the day. At first, I was just a bit annoyed by it because I couldn’t get ANYTHING done. But the trade-off for us was that he would sleep 10-12 hours a night at 6 weeks. After that, I just found other ways to keep him entertained throughout the day so I could do things. Our second, Gracie, was a different story. She was good for a three hour nap during the day and slept 10-12 hours at night at 6 weeks! I didn’t know what to do with the time I had. Since Jackson never took naps during the day, I found myself checking on her during her nap to make sure she was ok. It’s funny how kids can be so different. Good luck!!

Eli is such a doll. My kids never napped well either until they were older. Whoever said that newborns just sleep and eat and poop never met my kids at that age. Who has easy newborns that sleep all the time? Not me.

His sleep schedule sounds a bit like my R’s sleep schedule. The first month home, he napped a lot. Then it became very hit or miss. And he would never go “down” for a nap…as in putting him in his crib or pack-n-play. It would be in his swing or bouncy seat (or in his car seat after we’d been out and about). Then, one weekend when he was a little more than four months old, he started napping. He started giving very clear clues of getting sleepy, and we started putting him in his crib. And like magic, he’d sleep for anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

He still doesn’t have a schedule…sometimes his long nap in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon. Sometimes he’s ready for a short nap at 9:00 a.m., other times not until 11:00. So we don’t push the scheduling…we just read his cues and follow appropriately.

And we do find that he sleeps better in his crib than in our room (shifting gears to the overnight now). Like Eli, he would consistently wake around 4:00, eat, and go right back to sleep. Then one day he just started sleeping until 6:00 or 7:00. We didn’t do anything or change anything…he just decided that he didn’t need to eat in the middle of the night anymore.

Enjoy your sweet baby. R is 6 months today, and I can’t believe it!

    Gah, he’s so cute!

I would lose my mind if my kids didn’t nap. Even my big kids have to go to their rooms for quiet time for at least 1.5 hours in the afternoon. I just need that time to only have to take care of the baby, or hopefully do nothing.

Yes the time is flying. My little guy will be two months on Monday! 2 months! But I don’t mind so much, I’m not a huge fan of the first few months.

What adorable photos! Not sure what might help with the naps. Have you tried laying down with him in bed, nursing him to sleep? That always worked for me and from there you can try transferring him to the crib or set up a bunch of pillows on the floor in case he rolls off the bed (mine never did at that age though.)

Good luck getting him to sleep in the crib if that’s what you want! We coslept with ours until they were around 11 months old and by then they were definitely ready to be in their own space!
