Vaseline

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010
By Beth

A few weeks ago, I had lunch with Kate. We talked extensively about blogging. I tried to share tips and insights with her when I realized that I’m not really good at blogging, I just have a blog and I write on it and that’s about it.

I explained that I’m just myself and that’s it. I don’t have a brand, I don’t promote myself, I don’t get asked to speak at conferences, it’s just me in my corner of the blogging world. Sometimes I have a lot to say and sometimes my mind is blank. Sometimes, I consider coming here and telling you all about my weekend and then I second guess myself and think “why in the hell would anyone want to know how boring my weekend was? Even I don’t want to know.”

She told me that she sort of wanted to know what I did during my weekend and also she wanted to know what was in my purse.

Vaseline. I carry vaseline in my purse. I used to carry a big tub of it, but my friends made fun of me (which I totally deserved), so now I carry around a “cute” little travel-sized version, it’s pretty convenient.

I use Vaseline for my lips. Always, like ten times a day. (this post is not sponsored by Vaseline.)

(I just like Vaseline.)

When I wake up in the middle of the night, all thirty-nine times, thanks to a certain 8 month old, I have to put Vaseline on my lips before laying back down.

Yep, I have another container of it by my bed.

I also drink about 20 ounces of water throughout the night and I like my ankles. (when not pregnant.)

I drink about 100 ounces of water throughout the day. My friend, Sarah, calls me a water buffalo.

I’m left handed when I eat and write but everything else, I use my right hand. (but when it comes to bowling and ping pong, I use both hands. Not surprisingly, I suck at both bowling and ping pong.)

When I was little, even though I had five brothers and sisters, I also had an imaginary friend. Her name was Lois and I swear to you, I miss her. (she was real. I know it.)

In first grade, I had light blue velcro Nike’s. OMG, I felt so cool.

I wish I knew how to do fun things with my hair and I wonder why my eyelashes are so wimpy but my husband’s are awesome. (but I don’t mind, I swear.)

I had three Cabbage Patch Kids: Nellie Sue, Trudy Diane and Clark Barlow.

Also, I tend to remember really dumb details.

I used to read every single night but I haven’t read a book in over a year. I miss it.

My hair has been every single color, I have a tattoo and I used to have a belly ring. Now my hair is brown, I still have a tattoo and my belly button sags to my knees.

It took me eight minutes to write this.

What else do you want to know?

Ask me anything.

Snow Day

Monday, December 13th, 2010
By Beth

The kids are home from school, Brian is home from work, the house feels so cozy and warm. We are all still in our pajamas.

Our entire county is under a state of emergency, no one should be on the roads except emergency vehicles. Lots of snow, ridiculous wind and sub-zero temperatures. I love looking outside and seeing my neighbor’s homes and picturing all of them, snug in their homes, a cup of coffee in their hands, still wearing their pajamas, cuddled up with their families.

It’s almost like today was a gift to slow down. Stop the rush, stop the everydayness of everyday…just be still.

It’s not a snow day.

It’s a slow day.

I saw this blanket at the Anthropologie store in Indianapolis last month. The minute I saw it, I knew it was mine, everything about it was perfect. I love buying things knowing that my children and grandchildren will use them.

And then I saw the price tag and promptly put it down because there is no way I could/would buy a throw for $198. But I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

(it’s way more amazing in person, I think I should learn how to knit, just so I can recreate this.)

Today, I plan to take photos, clean my home, light candles and make some almond tea ring. Tea ring is a recipe that we’ve enjoyed in our family for as long as I can remember. My Grandma used to make it for all of us at Christmas. We’d wake up each Christmas morning and have a slice with butter on it. Nothing says Christmas more than tea ring. Last year, I took on the reigns and made it for the first time.

I was thinking about sharing this recipe with all of you.

I’m still thinking. It’s so delicious and should be shared. My Grandma would be proud.

If you are at home, enjoy the stillness.

If you are at work, take a moment to breathe in and breathe out. There’s a difference between being still and doing nothing.

Just be still and happy slow day.

Friday Morning Coffee

Friday, December 10th, 2010
By Beth

I’m so appreciative when the sun shines in the winter. We had gone one too many days without the sun. I’d wake up in the morning and have to turn the lights on downstairs because opening the blinds and curtains didn’t change anything.

Today the sun is shining like yesterday and the day before. I always notice when the sun is shining. (rather than just noticing when it’s not.)

Yesterday, I moved furniture around in my living room. We put up the Christmas tree and moved the TV over last weekend and the room felt so wrong and messy. It feels better now. My stockings are hung, my mantle is decorated, my house has Christmas settled around it. I decided to keep with my simple theme and not put everything out.

I’m drinking coffee and Eli is rolling around on the floor with his toys. Right now feels really good because he doesn’t need me. I love it when my kids need me but Eli sometimes (always) can’t focus on anything but me when I’m around. Right now, he’s playing with toys and I know he knows I’m here because I just fed him.

I love that he’s in our family, I can’t believe he’s eight months old and I can’t believe he cut his seventh tooth yesterday.

I keep playing back this time last year and how we didn’t know Eli was a boy, how he was such a dream to us.

This morning, he woke up and Noah asked to go in and say “hi” to him. I told him he could and I listened to him go in there and say “good morning, little fellow!” and he started saying silly things to him, just like Noah does. Noah calls he and Eli “bros” and it’s pretty much more than I can handle, so much cuteness and love.

Anna comforts him, picks him up off the floor (while she’s sitting) and pats his back and tells him “it’s okay” if he’s crying. The other day she spent about fifteen minutes doing flashcards with him on the floor in front of the Christmas tree.

I do not have my Christmas shopping done and am no where near being done. To be honest, Brian gets a Christmas bonus every year and that’s what we use for Christmas shopping.  Sure I’ve done some, here and there, but the majority is waiting to be done. So, I’m sitting patiently, trying to plan my purchases, wanting to be smart, not wanting to overdo it…

This year, I’ll have three babies on Santa’s lap. It’s funny that Christmas is so magical for kids, with the wonder, the lights, the excitement…but this year, may be my most magical year, yet.

Life is funny that way.

You Capture – Sweet

Thursday, December 9th, 2010
By Beth

Hi friends.

Let’s see if I can whip up a nice little You Capture post now. Since I last posted about my technical difficulties, I took a few (ten thousand) deep breaths, made a batch of (boxed) chocolate chip and (boxed) blueberry muffins and swept and mopped my floor. Eli is now busily pushing the highchair around the kitchen floor. I swear he thinks he’s three. HE’S EIGHT MONTHS OLD FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

He loves playing on the kitchen floor which is delightful because I needed the incentive to sweep up the dried taco meat off of the floor. I’m just kidding. I DID NOT have dried taco meat on the floor.

(OHMYGOD, YES I DID.)

Anyway, I have all sorts of sweetness for you.

Mostly in the form of kids.

Like my two older kids who helped me decorate the tree. Brian and I sat on the couch and drank Bailey’s and they did the work. It was magical.

On Tuesday morning, I had coffee with Sarah Viola. We used to do this often but then we both had babies and we both have businesses at home, so we’ve been failing at making time for this luxury, but we did this week. So, I got to see Asher’s eyelashes.

And here’s a chocolate chip muffin for you. Well, they’re really for my brother in Iraq, but you can have one.

Now it’s your turn to share some sweetness!

PLEASE READ THIS GUIDELINES, especially, yes, especially if you have never linked up!

1.  Anyone can join in on the challenge at anytime.
2.  Please make sure the photos you use were taken for the challenge, meaning do not search your archives for an appropriate photo.  The goal of You Capture is to get you out taking photos each week!
3.  Use YOUR photos.
4.  When linking up, only link to your You Capture blog post, not your main blog URL.   (incorrect links will be deleted.)
5.  You MUST link back to You Capture in your post.
6.  I encourage you to visit other participants and leave comments.  This is a great way to meet new friends!

{more You Capture info can be found here.}

Outside. Put your gloves on, grab your camera and take in this season while it’s still new. Come back inside, stir up some hot chocolate and download your images. That’s an order!

oh and Sarah Viola showed me that Target carries Peppermint Whipped Cream, so you better add that to your hot cocoa.

Happy Capturing!

bear with me

Thursday, December 9th, 2010
By Beth

I am having some serious technical and parental difficulties. Seems the stars are not aligning for me to accomplish You Capture today. Thanks, Crappy Computer! Thanks, Cranky Non-Napping Baby!

Please bear with me. I’ll be back soon. I’ll probably be drunk. But I’ll be back.
