The kids are home from school, Brian is home from work, the house feels so cozy and warm. We are all still in our pajamas.
Our entire county is under a state of emergency, no one should be on the roads except emergency vehicles. Lots of snow, ridiculous wind and sub-zero temperatures. I love looking outside and seeing my neighbor’s homes and picturing all of them, snug in their homes, a cup of coffee in their hands, still wearing their pajamas, cuddled up with their families.
It’s almost like today was a gift to slow down. Stop the rush, stop the everydayness of everyday…just be still.
It’s not a snow day.
It’s a slow day.
I saw this blanket at the Anthropologie store in Indianapolis last month. The minute I saw it, I knew it was mine, everything about it was perfect. I love buying things knowing that my children and grandchildren will use them.
And then I saw the price tag and promptly put it down because there is no way I could/would buy a throw for $198. But I haven’t stopped thinking about it.
(it’s way more amazing in person, I think I should learn how to knit, just so I can recreate this.)
Today, I plan to take photos, clean my home, light candles and make some almond tea ring. Tea ring is a recipe that we’ve enjoyed in our family for as long as I can remember. My Grandma used to make it for all of us at Christmas. We’d wake up each Christmas morning and have a slice with butter on it. Nothing says Christmas more than tea ring. Last year, I took on the reigns and made it for the first time.
I was thinking about sharing this recipe with all of you.
I’m still thinking. It’s so delicious and should be shared. My Grandma would be proud.
If you are at home, enjoy the stillness.
If you are at work, take a moment to breathe in and breathe out. There’s a difference between being still and doing nothing.
Just be still and happy slow day.

I do not know what a Tea Ring is but it sounds heavenly. Please share.

Enjoying my coffee and PJs right now, as a matter of fact. Although, I suggested that my boys go play a game and they thought that meant “Moms gonna play a game with us!” And I think I am going to have to shower first, just to prep myself for some game playing
I so wish that we were having a slow day. There’s no snow here and it doesn’t look like there will be before Christmas. Your day sounds heavenly! Enjoy it!
We’re enjoying our snow day as well, and I totally agree with you that it’s a gift. A pure and simple gift. I love today! I’m working on Christmas cards and cleaning the house.
I think your blanket is crocheted, not knit, which means 1) you could probably wrangle an aunt or a godmother or someone into recreating it or 2) you could make it one granny-square at a time yourself, which might take a zillion years but definitely wouldn’t cost $200. But don’t listen to me, I’m a knitting not a crocheter so I could be talking out of my butt.
Enjoy your slow-snow day! It sounds so cozy!
Your day sounds absolutely lovely. I look forward to days like this.
And your almond tea ring sounds delicious. I hope you decide to share the recipe. If you do, I will make it.
You know, I almost wrote “maybe it’s crocheted, I really don’t know the difference.”
Because I really do not know the difference.
Buy the throw! I LOVED that throw too, but felt the same about the cost. I then decided to try and semi-recreate it. Bought a bunch of different yarns. All those different yarns add up….lots of $$$. I love the one I made, but I say…..buy the throw! You’ll love it every time you see it.
“There is a difference between slowing down and doing nothing.”
I love that. So true.
About fifty images flashed through my head at the mention of Tea Ring. Since I have no idea what one is. If it is baked, me wanty.
The Tea Ring sounds yummy. I wsh I could take a slow day. I am way behind with my decorating. My husband hauled all 9 containers in from the shed. I had no idea I had that much stuff. The grandkids love to walk in and see my little house transformed. I love it too. Merry Christmas to you Beth.
You slow day sounds amazing, but in reality I have a hard time having a slow day. The kids get needy and I get frusturated. I’m hoping your words can help me appreciate the slowness more. Stay warm and cozy.
A snow day would be nice. No snow for us here in the south, and to be honest, I could use one. There are days I wish it would just rain all day so I could have an excuse to be inside and slow down. The sunshine always makes me feel guilty for not getting out and getting stuff done. Today is cold – 38 degrees outside right now and very very windy – but still the suns shines and there is grocery shopping to do, gifts to wrap, errands to run, and try as I might – I just can’t slow down. Enjoy your snow day. I wish I could have one too.
Such a wonderful post, Beth. I hope you have such an awesome snow/slow day! I am home with my kids too (my husband went to work). My daughter is cuddled up on the couch watching Barbie and my son is playing DS. It is a nice day to be home.
I would love to know your dear Grandma’s recipe for tea ring- I am searching for the perfect thing to make on Christmas morning. Oh, and I think you should save your money and buy that beautiful quilt- because you deserve it!
I’m both “at home” and “at work” and just took a nice deep breath. Thanks for the reminder.
I love your recipes and that you share them with us all….nikki comes home this wednesday from college and we are going to spend the next 10 days baking…..(at least that’s my hope)…..PLEASE share your tea ring recipe…..you grandma would be proud that you were so kind and generous in doing so (wink…wink…)!!!! Happy slow snow day…..it’s the best!!!! xoxoxo
I’ve spent the last 15 minutes or so researching crocheted afghans and even on eBay and Etsy they are like $180 .
Go buy the Anthropolgie one immediately.
Or make Stephanie make you one.
Either way, you win.
Oh I love snow! It does make everyone slow down and enjoy the closeness of home, family, children and nice warm things…:) Maybe you can post some pictures of the snow later? I am a bit jeolous… we never get snow here
(maybe if my kids pray hard enough, maybe then we will get some?)
Ps. Do you follow the Pioneer Woman? http://www.thepioneerwoman.com. She’s featured the same throw on her site today, and she’s doing a giveaway for a $250 anthropologie gift card. it’s a long shot, but thought I would pass it along for ya.
I really enjoyed your post! It was the perfect thing to read with my afternoon cup of tea. I now can’t wait for our first snow day!!
Thanks
1. you were in indy, in the Anthro, and didn’t notify me? I take issue.
2. We had a two hour delay, which is a slow start, not necessarily a slow day, but I’ll take it!
3. Share that tea ring, right now.
Sounds perfect.
Oh I love me those slow still days!
We have been nicely couped up in our home too due to the severe weather! And oh am I enjoying it!
FYI–I just popped over to pioneer woman’s site and low and behold she is having a giveaway under the home and garden tab I believe…it’s showing the blanket you love so much. I think it’s a sign. Hugs, I hope you win it
I needed to read a post like this to remind me that it’s ok to rest.
I also lust after basically everything on that website, but can never bring myself to pay full price.
What a pleasant way to spend the day. Everyone needs a relaxing day every now and then to spend with the family. I’ve seen alot of people talk about Anthropology, and their redicilous prices. But apparently they have alot of knitwear I’ve seen people try to recreate. I should check them out for inspiration.
Oh man, I love Anthropologie too, though my wallet doesn’t quite get it. Check out the clearance section for home goods. I bet your throw blanket will appear there in a few weeks to a month. Good luck!
Don’t get me started on Anthropologie! LOVE it. And, that cozy blanket is something I would totally pick up….then put down. XO!
yes recipe please!!
