You Capture | Red

February 3rd, 2011

Red is such a lovely, vivid color.

I use a red coffee mug every day of my life and didn’t take photos of it. I just realized this as I’m sitting here next to my red coffee mug, writing this post.

I also have a string of red hearts on my mantle…I didn’t capture those either. Actually, as I look around, I have a lot of red that I didn’t even notice.

Luckily, I found red elsewhere.

Guess what? A few weeks ago I bought a point and shoot. I keep it in my purse so I don’t have to lug around my big, dreamy camera. I thought it was so fun because it’s the size of a credit card but it seems as though I’m not very good at using it. Also: poor quality (despite 14.1 mp), flash and I put my face to the view finder almost every.single.time like it’s a DSLR. Also, the first time I used it, I would be having serious conversations with people and I’d go to turn it off, but instead I’d hit the shutter button, taking an inappropriate photo up the noses of myself and the person with whom I was conversing.

Anyway. Two of my photos were taken with a point and shoot. I’m not going to lie that I think that is pretty cool because you can be creative and have fun without having a super fancy badass DSLR and my point and shoot cost roughly 50 million dollars less than my DSLR (roughly, I said, geeze.) So, my point is this: you can take good photos with any camera. The goal is to have fun.

Got it?

We went to Chicago last week for Anna’s birthday and I captured two photos for this week’s You Capture.

Here you go:

Then yesterday, I enlisted the help of my DSLR, slapped on an extra pair of pants, three shirts, gloves, scarf, hat, boots and walked through four foot drifts and took a picture of our poor red swing in the middle of the blizzard.

Know what the picture says to me? Winter killed summer.

Winter is such a jerk.

Loved this assignment! Amazing how we see so much more color once we’re tuned into it. Your shots are so cool — I especially like “Red Eye.” And, I totally agree with you: winter IS a jerk. :)

I LOVE the shot of the swing in the snow! Gorgeous..and yes, totally screams “winter killed summer”.

I would complain about next week’s assignment being “cold” because I live in THAILAND…but I know you all are going through the blizzard to end all blizzards so I’m just gonna go ahead and shut up now. :)

Hope you all are staying safe and warm and dry!

Great shots! Even with your point and shoot. I grew up outside of Chicago and last time we went to visit we went to the American Girl store- it was pure torture for my husband :)

Love your shots – especially the shopping bag! I used to carry around a P&S, but now I just use my iPhone. It takes better quality photos, I think, than my P&S did, plus I always have it with me anyway. :)

First of all, I love the American Girls bags and the Red Eye box – delightful!! But that red swing in the snow should be framed. Perfect! Second, I just redid the header on my blog (and gave the whole blog a little make-over) and it’s all because of you. I wouldn’t have taken any of those photos if you hadn’t created You Capture to bump me out of my comfort zone. So thanks. Again. :-)

That red swing reminds me of our snow fall last year. We knew it was a lot of snow when the tire swing completely disappeared under it. It was like the ropes just ran right into some hidden place beneath the snow.

I do not envy you right now, at all, LOL!

I love your Redeye shot. And the swing. Maybe there should be a special You Capture where no DSLRs are allowed. I carry a P&S with me all the time, too. Or, if people don’t have a P&S, they have to use their kit lens on manual. Might be interesting…

I really got the hang of my point and shoot when I had one. But I lurve my DSLR – not that I know what I’m doing half the time but I actually shot my daughter’s gymnastics meet in manual mode. For that I patted myself on the back.

    But your pictures? Lovely.

Love the swing picture. We have something similar here, right out my office window. Our poor tire swing is frozen in a snowdrift, immobile. But I must confess, I love the snow. A cold, dark, snow-less winter is no fun. A snowstorm every week and more snow than we’ve had in decades? Now that is what I call an exciting winter! :) Plus, it’s so darn pretty.

Nice. I loved getting the new iphone for Christmas which doubles as my point and shoot camera. So many fun photo apps too.

I love that you got adventurous with that shot of the swing. I love the light and dark, the little splash of color with the snow covered swing, and the vertical lines.

Great work as always Beth! Thank you again for hosting this challenge. I’m loving it!

Thanks for the reminder that this is about having fun and picking up the camera. I know that with my head, but my heart LONGS for one of the badass DSLR’s! :) Still You Capture has really helped me to work on framing my shots. Some turn out better then others, but I love the practice of learning how to “see” creativly. One day I’ll get my DSLR and hopefully, I’ll be further along on my journey because of the practice I’m getting now! Love your shots by the way! How fun!

The picture of the swing buried in the snow reminds me of winters when I was a kid and we would try to swing even when the snow was deeper than the bottom of the swing. We never had much success, but it didn’t stop us from trying.

Love the picture of the swing! I have such trouble with snow pictures, mostly because I am so new at photography and just can’t seem to get the exposure right.
I love the way this one turned out though! I really wish we had that much snow instead of all the ice we have right now!!!

Boy that swing sure says it all. :) Oh man-

The point & shoot captures came out great. I think it’s all in the user. Although my actual point & shoot did a poor job in comparison to the one I have now- but it’s still far from my dream DSLR. Ahhhh, one day, one day. This is my “learning camera”. It’s what I will use to convince my husband that even though I don’t plan on being a professional- I still need something fancy to make the photos better :)

Oh how I love love LOVE this post today and not even because it’s full of the color of Love or that you take exquisite pictures. Nope. While those are valid points, I’m especially in love with the fact that you talk about your point and shoot. I have a little Canon Powershot and while I certainly dream of the moment I get my DSLR, it gets the job done cheerfully. I’ve been able to go from 0 photography skills to a tiny bit better thanks to time spent learning photography tips and getting to know my point and shoot. Your photos are a living pep talk to all us p&s users out here :) !
