Pain in the tooth

April 4th, 2011

I had intended to share photos from Eli’s party but yesterday afternoon I started getting a little toothache. By evening, it hurt pretty bad. I slept pretty poorly, woke up, took some Tylenol, tried calling my dentist, just got a voicemail. I continued to ache and continued to call. Voicemail. Ache. Voicemail. Ache.

Finally, they called back and said they couldn’t get me in until Tuesday morning.

“so, since I have to wait 24 hours, can something be called in until then. I’m really uncomfortable.”

“You can take four Advil.”

“Okay, but I’m pregnant.”

“You’re pregnant?!?!!? Don’t take the Advil and your OB has to fill out a form before we can see you.”

I got in contact with my OB, they had faxed the form back right away and I’m just sitting, waiting for ten tomorrow morning. I put Eli down for a nap, I laid down in my bed and fell right to sleep. Then, out of nowhere, a shooting pain shot through my gums into my ear. The pain continued and never, ever stopped. In fact, it became worse.

I called the dentist back and asked if they could PLEASE call something in. They said “no.”

I called my OB’s office, they called in Tylenol 3. We went to pick it up.  Friends, I was in excruciating pain times 100. I can’t even describe it to you. I wanted to be knocked out, shot, anything. We went to Walgreens and they hadn’t checked their voicemails, yet.

So, no pain medicine.

I start crying. AGAIN. (I’m in the car, freaking the shit out of my kids, I’m sure) Brian’s inside probably telling the pharmacist that if he doesn’t check his voicemail, it’s very likely I’ll come in and check it for him.

After an hour, we get the prescription. I come home, take the medicine. My tooth laughs at it. I still want to die.

And here I am. Still waiting for ten tomorrow morning.

good times.

Oh, man. There is nothing worse than tooth pain. I’m not sure what your situation is, but I can tell you for certain that it’s probably time for a new dentist. Or at least a conversation with your current dentist that the treatment you received from his/her office staff was unacceptable and that you intend to seek treatment elsewhere. Just suffer in pain isn’t an acceptable answer.

I’m sorry you have to go through that and I hope tomorrow goes well.

Oh Beth, that sucks I’m sorry.

I’m a dental hygienist, too bad we don’t live closer I could hook you up. I know many many dentists.

If it’s an absess they might need to put you on antibiotics too. 2nd trimester is usually recommended the best trimester to get dental work done in if you need it. If they need to take an x-ray (sometimes it’s necessary to diagnose the problem, don’t worry it’s very minimal radiation. Even lower if your dentist has digital x-rays) ask them to double up on the lead shield. . .just in case. Sometimes I will put it on on the back, and the front. I always do it to ease the minds of the mommies I work on. If it makes you feel any better I took x-rays on patients for my entire pregnancy 5 days a week and Nate came out healthy.

You could maybe try ice packs? That might help if there is swelling.

Toothaches are the worst! I had to get a root canal a few years ago and it was INSTANT relief! Good luck!

Oh honey, I’m so sorry. Take a really hot washcloth and hold it against the painful areas. When it starts to cool off, get it hot again. It was the only thing that saved me when I had a horrible earache and couldn’t get meds right away. I hope they can help you!

I’m not sure if it’s too late, but a homeopathic remedy for tooth pain is CLOVE OIL, which can be found at a natural foods store. It worked wonders for me when I had a dry socket after getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Good luck!

When I used to work in a dentist office, we used to advise patients with a tooth ache to rinse the tooth with warm salt water as salt is an anelgesic. Sounds kind of basic, but it really really helps. Do it often, and it will help wash away the pain.
Table salt, warm water, rinse and spit, rinse and spit. It will reduce the angry villian until you can get some help!

That sucks big time! I can fully relate. I had the same problem when I was pregnant with my 2nd. She was draining my calcium right from my teeth. My dentist and I became very good friends throughout my pregnancy. (BTW, if they don’t offer two lead shields for the belly, just ask.) Good luck doll.

I just got back to the office AFTER going to my dentist for the exact same thing! Oh My Granny at the pain I have been in for almost a week now and I still have to wait a week before anything can be done. Antibiotics for infection and Vicodin for pain … not only is my tooth laughing at me but my whole mouth feels like a ton truck is driving through it.
    I feel your pain!

I hope you are feeling much better today, I’m so sorry. And ditto the comment about the clove oil.

My friend had a wisdom tooth pulled while she was pregnant without any drugs. Can you imagine? That’s like the toughest thing I’ve ever heard.

I’ve never commented before, so I’ll start by saying “hi”. Four things. 1. Love your blog. I have an 8 month old daughter, so it’s fun watching Eli to see where she’ll be shortly. 2. Congratulations on your pregnancy. 3. LOVE the photos of the party. I’m totally bookmarking this for Erin’s birthday party…all very do-able. 4. You’re a better person than I am. I’d have a new dentist by now. Hope you feel better.

oh my gosh I’m new to your blog but I’m a dental hygienist and it sounds like you may be having an abscess situation. I’ve had one and the pain is incredible until it bursts or they relieve the pressure with a rest treatment the pain can last a while. I am so sorry it looks like you must have had your appointment today. I am curious at the result.
I love the birthday party photos and I am preparing for my son’s party in a weeks time I am planning on doing the photos on a sting idea myself.
