You Capture Workshops

December 12th, 2011

Life is not

a someday thing

or a one day thing.

It is a right now,

everyday thing.

I can remember sitting on my couch while Anna and Noah would nap six years ago, I’d be on a laptop browsing photographer websites. I would be so inspired to do the same thing. I’d dream of walking into a client’s home and photographing a child, delivering a gallery to the parents and giving them something they could not have gotten anywhere else. Something cherished and beautiful, important and lasting.

I can recall sharing images with Brian. “Look at this image! Look at her eyes! They way she does her black and whites. This photo makes me cry, does it affect you the same way?”

I’d take thousands of photos of Anna and Noah. Each year, it seemed, I was able to get a new camera, something newer, faster, a bit more shiny and expensive. I can remember talking to my brother on the phone about someday opening a business.

Years have gone by.

I could have continued to just dream that dream. Instead I started to live that dream. Countless photos taken, over fifty session (many unpaid), local classes, online courses, workshops in other states.

I’m ecstatic with where I’m at, I’m looking forward to learning so much more, whether it’s through different workshops or just shooting everyday.

Although the journey has been long, it’s been worth it.

Many months ago I realized I wanted to teach photography locally. It’s missing from our area. I took a class at the local university and I learned nothing of value. I sit with moms during my newborn sessions and they ask where they can go to learn photography and I can’t give them anything.

So, I’ve decided to put these things together and teach. To take my idea and GO.

My first workshop will be held in February. It’s a photography class for Moms. Moms just like you, you have kids, you have cameras, you just want to take better photos and I’m going to help with that. (instruction on lighting, composition and how to captivate your subject. And of course, it’s open to everyone, not just mamas!) The class after that will be a two day workshop teaching DLSR user how to shoot in manual.

Check out more information here!

I’m excited. Scared. Nervous. But mostly? I’m happy. I’m happy the idea came to me, that it flourished inside of me and that I’m taking the LEAP. And maybe this will be the only one, maybe I’ll only teach to two people in my lifetime but I’m just happy that I’m trying and praying that it leads to great things and great relationships with great people.

I think that’s supremely cool of you. What always holds me back from doing things is being scared. Good for you for taking the leap! It’s going to be great!

I wish there was some way to do this for people who lived far away. Because I would TOTALLY sign up if I could–for both classes. The better picture class and the shooting in manual.

    :(

Just for moms? I think I know at least one grandma that loves to take pictures but knows she could do a better job – she can always tell when she looks at the pictures her daughter takes.

I know if I lived (much) closer, I’d want to be there! (I don’t think there is anything like that around here, either.) I hope your workshops go SO well. I’m so excited for you!

Congratulations for making that leap! You have an amazing talent and I think it’s wonderful that you’re getting the chance to share it. I’m trying to learn using my camera better, I love capturing great shots, but I think for me it’s all about luck unfortunately! Good luck in February, I’m sure it’ll be a great success.

Congrats for taking the leap Beth. You have described the last year of my life. I wish I didn’t live so far- I would definitely sign up. Have you thought about possibly an e-class or private mentoring sessions via Skype?? I would be interested in that for sure!

Good luck with this! This thought actually just crossed my mind as well. This whole post of yours actually hit home! I’ve been tinkering with this business off and on since 2006. My current goal is to make it my full time job the the end of 2013! I take every class I can get my hands on. There are several out there I would love to take but can’t afford!
Wish I was close and I would come see how you are going to handle this. I actually had a mom at my church tell me Sunday night that learning how to use her camera is a dream of hers. I would love to offer something for everyone from a point & shoot to a DSLR!

this is fabulous! Im not close by, but I have to say- you are wonderful for doing this at a price moms can afford. A local (and amazing) photog did a mom’s workshop here. It was something like $400 for the one day class. I know she gave fabulous swag bags- but really- how many people can afford that???? So, for all the moms in your area- THANK YOU for making this attainable!
