Dream World

March 27th, 2009

I have been having the craziest dreams.  Some are completely disturbing and some are just silly, but mostly, they are disturbing.

In real life, I am hosting a Pampered Chef Fundraiser Party for Team James and Jake tonight.  The idea is that rather than hosting a show and earning free products, Pampered Chef will instead donate a portion of the sales to Team James and Jake.  It’s a fun way to raise money.

(edited to add: a few of you have asked if virtual friends can place an order from the show and the answer is yes, if you are interested, just email me and I’ll send along the details.  You will, however, have to have it directly shipped to you – foldinglaundry@gmail.com – also, if you live in the area, come on over!)

Yesterday, Brian and I went shopping for the goodies for tonight’s party.  Cheese, vegetables, fruit, meatballs, vanilla vodka and my beloved Miller Lite.  You know, your run of the mill “party” foods.

I went to bed feeling nice and prepared for tonight’s party, but then I had a dream.  A terrible dream that has knocked my confidence and my feelings of preparedness into the water.

First of all, in my dream, way too many people showed up.  People I didn’t even invite.  Then they arrived too early.  Then there were two owls in the tree by my front door who wouldn’t stop staring and “who-ing” at people as they arrived.

Because everyone arrived too early, I didn’t have a chance to get all of the food and drinks out, but everyone arrived REALLY hungry and REALLY thirsty.  I wound up trying to make Hamburger Helper (!!) but couldn’t find my bowls (bowls?) to serve it in because when everyone arrived I was rearranging my kitchen and I couldn’t find where I had shoved everything.

All of the guests just showed up and sat down.  Some in the kitchen, some in the living room and some in the garage.  While I was running around trying to get everyone satisfied, they openly talked about how sweaty and unprepared I was.

Even my Grandma was there, who passed away over ten years ago,  but she didn’t judge, she sat on the couch and just observed.  She wanted a glass of white wine.  I served it to her happily and in my best crystal wine glass.

Nobody would get their own drinks or their own food and nobody offered to help with anything.  They all just sat and watched me.

I also recall, in my dream, people asking for MY precious Miller Lite, even though we had so many great foreign and domestic beers available all they wanted was MY beer.  Before the party was even scheduled to start, my beer was gone.  I silently cried as I continued to get the food prepared.

My Pampered Chef consultant arrived late and when she did she laid down on the living room floor and starting nursing her newborn with her shirt wide open.  I know this because I had to step over her while I was serving people their Hamburger Helper in a bowl.  (and no, she doesn’t have a newborn and she’s also NEVER late.)

Then my sister Sarah showed up.   I was so excited because she’s such a great helper but she just told me that since I decided to have this party, I was on my own and that she has to go because she had to skip school.

This dream means one of two things:  first, it could mean that I’m really much more unprepared than I realize and that I should get moving rather than writing this damn post.  or two, it could mean that no matter what happens tonight, even if only three people show up (which is totally possible) that it’s okay, it will still turn out better than how it turned out in my dream.

But whatever happens, there better be some Miller Lite left over for me.

March 7th, 2009

I’ve had many readers asking me how I was able to capture Joshua Radin on stage without a flash and have the shots come out so clean.

Before I begin, here is my disclaimer:  I am a novice, so be gentle with me and feel free to not listen to me at all.

Joshua Radin

Here are the settings from this particular shot.  First I used my 50mm lens the entire night.  It’s my favorite lens.

F/stop (aperture): 1.8
Exposure time (shutter speed): 1/30 sec.
ISO (light sensitivity): 500

Meiko

F/stop (aperture): 1.8
Exposure time (shutter speed): 1/30 sec.
ISO (light sensitivity): 500

Joshua Radin

F/stop (aperture): 2.2
Exposure time (shutter speed): 1/100 sec.
ISO (light sensitivity): 640

Like I said in my original Joshua Radin concert recap, I took over 700 pictures and not all of them turned out this good.  In fact, many of them sucked.

oops 2592

Hello, darkness.

What went wrong?  Luckily, I can examine the settings and see what went wrong:
F/stop (aperture): 1.8
Exposure time (shutter speed): 1/320 sec.
ISO (light sensitivity): 100

What do I know from these numbers?  The shutter speed was much too fast, not allowing enough light to come in.  Live & learn.  The slower the shutter speed, the more light that’s let in…the faster the shutter speed, less light is let in.

oops DSC_2671

Hello, um, overexposure and blurriness.  What a mess.  Let’s take a look at what went wrong:
F/stop (aperture): 2
Exposure time (shutter speed): 1/4 sec.
ISO (light sensitivity): 800

Now this one stumps me, like I said, I’m still learning and I’m really trying to figure out what went wrong while writing this post.  My f/stop was low (although could have been slightly lower at 1.8, the lowest the 50mm goes) and my shutter speed was slow.  My guess is that I did not hold my camera steady enough, which is what has caused the blurriness with the slower shutter speed.  Also, my ISO was set a little bit high which can cause a lot of noise and overexposure in a photo.  Between the two, it’s a chaotic mess.

Through the entire performance I was constantly changing the settings trying to keep up with lighting and stage changes, it took a lot of work, but it was really great practice for me.

I do realize that many of you have no idea what this means, especially those with a point & shoot. I only say that because most (all?) point & shoots do not give you the option to get out of automatic.   I also realize that maybe my settings weren’t exactly correct, but that’s okay.

It’s a work in progress, I’m still practicing and learning with every shot I take.  I encourage you to do the same.

Does this help?  Questions?  (that I’m probably way under-qualified to answer, but that’s okay, I can pretend.  I’ll do anything for you.)

Joshua Radin

March 5th, 2009

The best way for me to recap Tuesday night, I think, is through photos.  But even that will not do the evening justice.

We had such a great night, from the sound check, to touching him to listening to him, even our dinner was among the best we have ever had.   everything was perfection.

Joshua Radin

I could have taken pictures all night long.

Oh wait, I did.  I took over 700 pictures.  (only 50 of them are really good, though.)  But that’s okay.

Joshua Radin

I have to admit, the actual concert I did feel pretty old.  I was definitely the only female not wearing a scarf (waaay too many scarves, people.) and I was definitely the only person with stretch marks.  But that’s okay.

Beth & Joshua Radin 1

Can you get over his total cuteness?  We are even more in love with him than ever before.  He is amazing.  If he is coming to your area, just go see him.  But don’t wear a scarf.  Unless you want to, if you do, that’s okay.

Joshua Radin sound check

I know some of you purchased his album and that makes me so happy because HE makes me so happy.  I can listen to his songs and just feel so good in my soul.  THAT is great music.

oh and Zach Braff totally showed up.

GIVEAWAY! I am giving away Joshua Radin’s album Simple Times to FOUR very, very, very lucky readers!  (I know I said three before, but I received a free one at the concert and I’m going to give it to one of you!)

What do you need to do to win? Well, Joshua, er…Mr. Radin has a song called Brand New Day, it makes me happy and fills me with hope, even during those heartbreaking moments when I feel not so good about things.  It helps me to remember that every day is MINE, every day is sacred.

In the comment section, just tell me what you are loving today.  Is it your shoes or the sunshine?  Is it your computer or your community?  Anything!  (just do not say pick me because that is so annoying.)

This giveaway ends on Monday, March 9th at 9:00 p.m. CST.  The winners will be chosen at random, one entry person, however, you’ll also receive an extra entry for tweeting this contest.  (Help me promote my new boyfriend, m’kay?)

One more thing, you can still vote for Joshua Radin’s video, I’d Rather Be With You on VH-1 right here.

You’re the best and good luck.  And thank you guys so much for sharing your excitement of this night with me, it made everything even more special.

(more pictures here.)

Friends, I’ve been holding out you.

March 3rd, 2009

Seal has spit on me, I’ve been asked about my laundry habits over the phone by Patrick Dempsey and I’ve eaten the greasiest burger I’ve ever had while sitting next to Monica Potter.  I’ve even gotten drunk with Jim Gaffigan.

But you guys?  Tonight takes the cake when it comes to meeting celebrities and incredible nights.

I have a new love and I haven’t shared him with you.  I’m not sure why, except I think it’s because I have issues with sharing and I’m pretty sure I wanted to keep him for myself.  And I realize that it’s not fair to you or him, but what can I say?  I’m selfish and he’s hot and talented, so therefore, I never shared with you.

Last year, when the family and I drove to New Jersey, Brian and I decided to download all of the songs from Grey’s Anatomy, they seem to have such great music and we have been in a music rut, we were pretty excited about it.  So, we turned on my iTouch and hit shuffle and listened and listened and listened.  Some songs were pretty good and some songs were just not and then this one song came on and I basically yelled at Brian “WHO IS THIS SINGING?!?!”  (I was driving, so I couldn’t look for myself.)

Joshua Radin, he replied.  The song?  The Fear You Won’t Fall.  (side note: go download the song RIGHT NOW.)

We instantly pulled out our Blackberries and typed his name and the song to keep for our records. (yes, we are total geeks.)  We listened to the song again and fell in love with it and him even more.

An hour later, another great song came on, “WHO IS THIS SINGING?!?!”  I asked Brian.

Joshua Radin.  The rest is history.  That song?  Closer.  (side note: go download the song RIGHT NOW.)

Since then, we have purchased almost everything he owns and we love everything he does.  His words and his smooth voice are perfection, his songs affect me in such a big way emotionally.   He has a song on his new album that if Brian and I were to get married tomorrow, it would be our song.  We haven’t had a song like that for ten years. And every couple needs a song like that.

For my birthday, Brian bought me tickets to see him in concert.  The concert is tonight.

And thanks to a twist in fate and a wonderful, wonderful woman, WE GET TO MEET HIM BEFORE THE CONCERT.  WE GET TO ATTEND THE SOUND CHECK, WE GET TO HAVE ONE AND ONE TIME WITH HIM.  AND YES, I KNOW ALL CAPS IS SO ANNOYING, BUT PICTURE ME SCREAMING THIS TO YOU, BECAUSE I AM.

I’m screaming and I’m sweating and I’m all red.  And when I meet him, I’ll probably die because that’s what I do when I meet/talk to famous people, I stroke out, I stop breathing, I probably pee a little bit, it’s not pretty, but it will be worth it.

Did I mention he’s best friends with Zac Braff?  Zach produced Joshua’s video.  (I feel all squishy inside using just their first names.  Sorry Mr. Braff and Mr. Radin.)

I’m going to be back here on Thursday to report to you about the dreaminess that this night holds for us, with pictures and interesting stories that hopefully will not involve me tripping, stuttering or sweating.  Also?  I’ll be giving away his new album, Simple Times to three very, very, very lucky readers.

And if you follow me on twitter, I’m certain I’ll be twittering about tonight. (@foldinglaundry)

In the meantime, do not wait a second and go see the awesomeness that is Joshua Radin.  Also, you can vote for his video right here, (I’d Rather Be with You), just click and drag his name into the number one spot and hit submit.  so easy.  (if you are psychotic like me, you can vote everyday.  Just sayin’.)

I better go.  I have a giant pimple on my chin that I have to tend to and I need to have a few heart attacks before I leave at two this afternoon.  Wish me luck.

(oooooh, I just found out that Joshua Radin’s album Simple Times will be the deal of the day on Amazon tomorrow, Wednesday, for $1.99!)
