Black screen of death **updated**
I'm writing this post on Brian's computer because I opened my laptop up tonight and it was a black screen with some strange words like "HARD ERROR--I HOPE YOU HAVE A BACK UP BECAUSE I'M GOING TO DIE" type of message.
Naturally I started to sweat and hyperventilate because losing my computer is like losing an extremity of mine. I very useful extremity that holds a ton of very important information in my life. My second mind, if you will.
I'm sitting at it's bedside waiting for it to reboot. I'm just sitting here watching the sad little hard drive light which means "I'm working, but I'm stuck." I'm trying not to panic. I love that little old laptop, but not as much as I love all that information on that little old laptop.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
Luckily, I'm married to a computer genius who says he is constantly backing up my computer, so no information should be lost, but he is probably saying that to talk me off the ledge I am standing on. It's a computer owners worst nightmare.
I better go hold vigil. My computer needs me right now.
Oh my, after 15 minutes it's finally showing icons on my desktop. A sliver of hope. (and a glimpse of the long night ahead...for Brian.)
UPDATED: It's dead. What am I supposed to do without bloglines, y'all?

I'll pray for you Beth cause I think you're gonna need it. All I can say is "don't jump". ha ha. SEriously, I have experienced that before and it ain't fun. My hard drive at work CRASHED not too long before we went to conference (work all year for that) and I lost EVERYTHING!!! eVERYTHING I tell you. Not to say that you will....I'm sure you won't. I'm sure you won't. (I'm just going to keep saying that). I do feel for you. Hope you can get it to come back up so you can get everything saved off there before it crashes again.

Count me in as a chart member of the "oh-thank-GOD-I-have-a-computer-geek-for-a-hubby" club! Despite his experience

Oh my! That's such a scary feeling. The mental inventory of everything on your computer that you would lose... makes me stressed just thinking about it.
p.s. Tag you're it :-)

Just keep chanting, It's going to Be Alright. It's going to Be Alright. It's going to Be Alright. It's going to Be Alright. It's going to Be Alright.

oh dear -- so sorry! that dawning realization that your computer is seriously sick is the worst. that and your car. expensive fixes, those usually are.

Maybe you could take it to a "computer store" and see if they can recover the information off your hard drive???
I am sooo sorry. I have been there and lost everything!!! Have a good cry - it might make you feel better. :)

moment of silence for your laptop.
i hope hope hope it comes back to life or that brian actually did backup your files. last christmas when my MOM was in town (suspicious) my computer crashed (coincidence? i think not) and i got the BLUE screen of death (which means "you're outta gas sucka"). and i have to admit that i cried. my sister came with me to take it to circuit city to see if they could salvage any of my files (which they couldn't) and i was all embarrassed, like WHY am i crying over computer files?? and we went to burger king for chicken strips and fries and that helped. but everything was lost.
so good luck! don't jump but keep the queso close by.

You have my deepest sympathies on your loss! I know your pain because my less than a year old MacBook had a complete hard drive failure yesterday, and I lost *everything*, including irreplaceable, very precious photos I'd just taken this past weekend and had just uploaded to my computer the night before. Makes you sick to your stomach, doesn't it?
